Microsoft Equipt – The package for home users

September 20th 2008

Browsing around this morning, I come across some information on Microsoft’s website advertising Equipt. Equipt is a new subscription based software package geared towards home users that provides three nearly essential applications:

  • Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007
  • Microsoft Live Onecare for better PC security and performance
  • Windows Live tools – Inluding Messenger, Writer, Mail, and Photo Gallery.

This package is bundled and sold as subscription based service with a yearly price tag of $69.99. Many families have multiple PCs in the home so they’ll be glad to learn that this subscription covers three PCs in your home.

There are two points that would be subscribers know:

  • You MUST renew each year. This package is subscription based.
  • You CANNOT use it at work or for business purposes. It is a violation of Microsofts TERMS and Conditions of use.

You can find more about Equipt along with the rest of Microsoft’s products at www.microsoft.com. You can purchase at your local office supply or electronics store.

Changing the Trend Micro CSM Suite password

July 26th 2008

I’ve been a fan of Trend Micro’s Client Server Messaging Suite for some time now and have it installed at most, if not all, of my client’s offices. They’ve recently upgraded and renamed the system to Worry-Free Business Security. This package contains upgraded client applications which help block malicious web-sites.

I recently picked up a new client in Dallas that has been using the CSM suite for a few years now, but had not had the license renewed in some time. No-one had the password for the Security Dashboard where I could check the status of the installed software. I was left to find a way to reset the password.

Follow the simple instructions below to change it.

To reset the password:

  1. Go to the <installed drive>\Program Files\Trend Micro\Security server\PCCSRV\Private directory.
  2. Find and open the ofcserver.ini file using your favorite text editor.
  3. Look for the MasterPwd=  parameter under the [INI_SERVER_SECTION]  section.
  4. Replace the MasterPwd=  value with 70 (The existing password is encrypted) .
  5. Save and close the ofcserver.ini file.
  6. Go to Services in the Windows Control Panel and Restart TM Security server  Master Service.
  7. Log into the Security dashboard  and type 1  as the password

Voila. You can now log in.

Replacing the screen on a HTC 8925 Tilt

January 20th 2008

I recently purchased the AT&T 8925 Tilt so that I could retire my aging Cingular 8125. It didn’t take me long to become highly attached to the Tilt and it’s many capabilities including GPS and the Windows Live Search Mobile. The screen clarity and the processor speed are also a few more of the many perks of the device.

Two weeks into owning the device, I took a weeks trip down to Panama City, Panama with my brother, taking the Tilt with me. It’s my contact to the world and is the hub of communications for my Technology Services business. Unfortunately, I have a habit of keeping the phone in my pocket, where upon getting out of a taxi, found the following.
